Module 1: Chapter 2

Chapter 2: Cognitive Development

Concept 1: A Definition of Development

Summary: There are four types of development within a human. There is physical development in which there are changes in the body. There is personal development which is when there are changes in the person's personality/characteristics traits. There is social development which affects how the human interacts with other humans. Finally, there is cognitive development that is how the person's thinking varies. Everyone develops differently, at different time rates, in different processes, and for differing reasons. Overall, it is important to realize that the four types of development within a human will vary due to the uniqueness of their design.

Reflection: The first thing I thought of when I read this section was how we have such a unique Creator that made every person differently. Obviously, everyone has different beliefs on how humans came to be, but I believe we were made by a creative God that want every person to be unique and special. He made us like the snowflakes in which every snowflake is beautiful, but different in some sort of way. He made us develop at differing times and in different ways. In the same way, as a future educator I have to be readily prepared to have many differing students in my classroom at different levels of development. I believe God made each of these students perfect in their own way and it's my task to accept them as they are and grow them in their learning.

Concept 2: The Brain and Cognitive Development

Summary: This section talks about how the cortex, which is the part of the brain that is associated with more advanced functions, has three main jobs. The jobs are receiving signals from sense organs, controlling voluntary movement, and forming connections. This section also addresses lateralization and how this explains what each hemisphere of the brain does and why it does it. These terms and definitions are important to teachers, so they are able to understand their students and create strategies/activities/etc. for their student's different ways of learning.

Reflection: I've always had a hard time understanding science topics such as anatomy and the way the brain works. I do know it's important to understand now that I have read this section. Knowing what the cortex does, how different brain hemispheres will affect my student's learning will affect how I teach my students. I really appreciated this section of chapter 2 because it was thorough and straight-forward. If I figure out which hemisphere is more active in a student, I can base my teaching and assessments off that and knowing what they struggle with and how they excel.

Concept 3: Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development

Summary: Piaget developed a theory of cognitive development and how humans try to make sense of the world by direct experience with others, items, and ideas. Humans have schemes in which they are in direct contact with and think about which affects their worldview. Humans as the progress move from different types of thinking levels. It has been said there are limitation to Piaget's theory due to him underestimating children and how they think while they are young. Overall, his work is greatly criticized for many reasons and a lot of people discount his theory of cognitive development.

Reflection: I believe that humans are much more that their experiences with others, items, and ideas. I believe that humans can experience cognitive development from literally any one and anything. Overall, I believe that my students will have a lot of moments of thinking and this shouldn't be categorized on a certain level or be thought of has higher/lower than other's thinking.

  1. Hi Dani!

I really liked reading about all the concepts you chose from chapter 2! Your reflection on your first concept of "A Definition of Development" was so well written and made me make the connection between what the author said about development and how it relates to the Christian perspective of God's creation. For your second concept of "The Brain and Cognitive Development", I think your point about knowing/having an idea of which hemisphere each of your students' brains use is super helpful and it shows how you want to be able to help them the best when teaching and having them do assignments and activities. And finally, for your last concept of "Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development", I thought everything you had to say about the overall information and your reflection was very interesting and informative. Your concepts were very well chosen and I was able to think about what was from the reading and relate it to your reflections. Well done!
