Module 4: Chapter 9 and 10
Chapter 10: Constructivism and Designing Learning Environments
Concept 1: Cognitive and Social Constructivism
Summary: There are two types of constructivism which is cognitive and social. Cognitive is basically how each individual sees the world and acts in it. It is a worldview and is shows values, cultures, religions, knowledge, and more. This was developed by Piaget. Social constructivism is how we engage with others in activities, communication, participation in various things, and more. This was developed by Vygotsky. These both can have similarities and differences to each other due to the attributes and who the creators were.
Reflection: I had never really heard of either of these, or even constructivism in general before reading this chapter. Something I relate back to cognitive constructivism is worldview though. During my first, second, and third year at Trinity I had heard the word "worldview" about a million times. Worldview to Trinity is basically identity and finding out who you are and where you fit in this world/community. It's your values, beliefs, what you know, who you know, religion, culture, family aspects, and more. I believe this is the same as cognitive constructivism, just a different word.
Concept 2: Collaboration and Cooperation
Summary: This section of Chapter 10 talks a lot about the differences between collaboration and cooperation and the different attributes that cooperative learning produces. Collaboration is how you are joining with others to complete a task; it is group work for a goal. Cooperation is the way you are working to reach this goal and if it is positively affecting the goal. Five elements of proper cooperative learning are encouragement, interdependence, constructive feedback, inclusion, and working to the dynamics of each group member. This section also goes into the barriers of cooperative learning and strategies.
Reflection: I have learned about communication and collaboration in a lot of my Special Education courses here at Trinity. I have also collaborated with others for projects, labs, lesson plans, presentations, and more. There is a lot of collaboration needed in the education setting, therefore, I must learn these skills now. Cooperative learning in the book is basically learning together. Something I really want for my classroom is to learn alongside them. I feel like if this is happening, then my students will see growth in the entire classroom. I will also be growing in my ways of thinking and not have a closed mindset.
Concept 3: Designing Learning Environments in a Digital World
Summary: This section of Woolfolk goes into how technology can still produce learning in students. There are e-learning platforms such as BrightSpace and Google Classroom. There are computers, iPads, tablets, phones, and digital readers to help with homework and learning. All of this can affect the way the student learns and grows. A flipped classroom is also mentioned in this section. This means that students watch a lecture or observe modeling outside of class on a technology platform for homework. When the students come to class the next day, they are completely worksheets and practice of the concepts learned with their teacher's help. Overall, technology is always going to be a relevant source within education.
Reflection: I think technology in classrooms is even more relevant now due to the pandemic and other aspects that affect our world today. Students are living in trying times and teachers have to be more creative than ever. Sickness, weather, and other world aspects are able to be supported through technology and online school access. Most students in school today have a tablet in which to do various activities, online games, and homework. This also leaves room for having a flipped classroom if needed.
I thought the section about utilizing technology in the classroom was very interesting. There is no doubt that we will have to adapt to technology when we are teachers, so I found it helpful to read about it and learn what the book had to say about the topic. As you said, technology is even more relevant, so I think it will be so important that, as teacher, we are prepared for adjustments and learning. I think it will be great to use as much technology as we can, because there are endless possibilities with technology. I think being adaptive and willing to adjust to the growing and changing technology will provide our students with the best possible learning opportunities.
